A central Illinois park is getting a $500,000 makeover.

The Champaign Park District invited the public to celebrate the transformation of Skelton Park, home to the first and only African American movie house and Vaudeville theater in the 1910s.

Park officials said the modifications highlight the history of Champaign County's many influential African American musicians.

The finished project should include musical instruments, new paths, lighting, a plaza for small gatherings and seating for watching performances, said park district officials

The Skelton Park Groundbreaking Ceremony happens Tuesday morning at 9:00 a.m.
