If your Labor Day activities take you to the lake, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is passing along this message.
The organization said to be extra careful when boating and swimming this weekend.
Officials said fatality statistics show in the past ten years 87% of drowning fatalities were men, 89% were not wearing a life jacket, and 87% were 18 and older.
Representatives gave a few tips to Lake Shelbyville vacationers: wear a properly-fitted life vest, keep children nearby, monitor weather conditions and don't depend on floating or air-filled toys.
They remind lake-goers that drowning is silent and can happen in seconds.
Lake Shelbyville Dam West Beach will officially close for the season on September 10th.
