John Deere and the American Farm Bureau Federation signed a memorandum of understanding Sunday guaranteeing farmers the right to repair their own equipment.
Under the agreement, John Deere pledges to provide farmers and independent technicians with repair codes, software, manuals and other resources needed to repair John Deere equipment. The agreement comes after years of discussion between the two sides.
"Our farmers spend a lot of money and make huge investments in very expensive equipment," said Zippy Duvall, president of the American Farm Bureau Federation. "We did have problems wtih having the opportunity to repair our equipment where we wanted to or repair it on the farm."
Under the MOU, the two sides also agree to meet twice each year for ongoing discussions of the agreement.
