Governor JB Pritzker has approved a measure to amend the state's criminal justice reform law.
The SAFE-T act, which takes effect January 1, ends cash bail in Illinois. The act as originally written listed forcible felonies for which judges could hold defendants before trial, including murder, sexual assault, arson and others.
The original bill drew criticism from State's Attorneys.
Last week, the Illinois General Assembly passed a measure amending the act, and expanding the list of charges for which judges could order defedants held before trial. Among the crimes on that expanded list are hate crimes, animal torture and DUI causing bodily injury.
Pritzker signed the amendment Tuesday.
