IL Treasurer Encourages Checking for Unclaimed Cash

Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs is encouraging people to check the state's unclaimed property database, since his office is safeguarding more than $3.5 billion woth of unclaimed property in the state.


"We return unclaimed property year-round, but it's that time of year when reuniting exta money and keepsakes with their rightful owners is even more special," Frerichs said.

Frerichs' office has already returned $1.5 billion in unclaimed property tax since he's been in office, Frerichs said.

The Treasurer's office estimates one in four adults who search their database find unclaimed property, and the average claim is $1,000.
