Fire Damages Effingham Church Building

Emergency crews responded to a fire at an Effingham church Thursday afternoon, according to the Effingham Fire Department.

The department received word of a fire in the office of First Presbyterian Church on West Temple Avenue around 1:16 p.m. When crews arrived, they found smoke and fire visible from outside the building.

After about 15 minutes, firefighters had the fire under control, the department said. Firefighter from the Altamont, Dieterich, Shumway and Teutopolis fire departments helped with the effort, officials said.

The entire building sustained smoke damage, but the majority of the fire damage was contained in the office area, according to details released by the fire department.
