A deadly fire at a Paris apartment building likely started from smoking materials, according to details released by the Edgar County Coroner Thursday.
Firefighters responded to reports of that fire at 501 South Central St. on October 1. Inside, they reported finding the body of Tammi Keefer, 52, in an upstairs apartment and Bobby Turner, 72, in a downstairs apartment.
Autopsies found Ms. Keefer died of smoke inhalation and Mr. Turner died of natural causes before the fire began, Coroner Scott Barrett announced.
Investigators believe the fire began on or near the couch that Mr. Turner had been on, Barrett said. Family and friends told investigators Mr. Turner had been a heavy smoker.
