U of I Police Report Rise in Bike, E-Bike, E-Scooter Thefts

Thursday, 20 October 2022

University of Illinois Police are fighting an increase in thefts of bicycles, e-bicycles and e-scooters, department officials announced Wednesday.

Between August 1 and October 12, university police received 50 reports of stolen bicycles, up from 26 reports during the same period in 2021 and 20 thefts during the same period in 2020, they said.

The department also received 19 reports of stolen e-scooters and e-bikes during that period; they received none during the same period in 2021 and 2020. The department attributes the increase in e-bike and e-scooter thefts to the increased popularity of those items.

So far, university police have arrested four people in connection with those thefts, and they have two additional people of interest, officials said in a news release. They believe those arrested are responsible for most of the electric scooter thefts.
