Mountain Lion Killed By Vehicle in Northern Illinois

Tuesday, 18 October 2022

According to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, a mountain lion was hit and killed by a vehicle on Interstate 88 in DeKalb County on Sunday.

Following the incident, the animal was taken to the University of Illinois for a full necropsy and DNA analysis to provide more information on it's movements across the Midwest, said IDNR.

Experts believe this may be the same mountain lion that was captured on a trail camera on private property in Whiteside County in late September, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

It is rare for a mountain lion to pose a threat to people or property and cannot be hunted, killed, or harrassed unless they pose an imminent threat, said the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
