Decatur Police Identify Officers in Deadly Shootout

Decatur Police have identified the officers involved in a deadly shootout during a traffic stop Wednesday.

During that traffic stop, driver Jamontey Neal showed a gun and fired at officers, who returned fire, police have said. Neal died of his injuries, and two officers were taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds.

On Monday, Police Chief Shane Brandel identified the two officers wounded in the incident as Sgt. Timothy Wittmer, a 15-year department veteran, and Officer Austin Bowman, a 2-year department veteran. Wittmer was shot multiple times and Officer Bowman was shot once, Brandel said. Both have since been released from the hospital.

In all, four officers fired shots during the incident, according to details released by police: Sgt. Wittmer, Officer Bowman, Officer Ryan Ricker, a 2-year department veteran, and Deputy Travis Wolfe, a 10-year veteran of the Macon County Sheriff’s Office.
