An Atwood man has died after a crash involving a tractor hauling grain wagons, the Coles County Sheriff’s Department announced Wednesday.
Gary Phillips, 81, had been driving north on Route 45 near Humboldt when he tried passing a tractor pulling grain wagons, authorities said. Mr. Phillips then saw an oncoming car, tried to return to his lane and hit a wheel on a grain wagon, causing his pickup truck to flip, according to the sheriff’s department.
Mr. Phillips was taken to an area hospital where he was later pronounced dead, authorities said.
