COLES COUNTY, Ill. (WEIU) - Following a disaster declaration in Coles County last week, both Charleston and Mattoon declare states of emergencies due to COVID-19.
The declarations grant Charleston Mayor Brandon Combs and Mattoon Governor Tim Gover certain powers in their respective cities to respond to emergencies related to the virus.
Powers include issuing curfews, banning alcohol sales, making provisions for temporary housing, closing streets and municipal buildings, and applying for state and federal resources if they are needed.
Following Gov. J.B. Pritzker's "Stay at Home" order, Coles County Board Chair Michael ZuHone says the courthouse, animal care center, highway department, and coroner's office are closed to the public until further notice.
Essential services will only be supported by appointment.
Both Charleston Fire stations are closed to the public, and the city has closed the restroom buildings at Lake Charleston.
The Lake Charleston Recreation Area, including the trails, fishing, and bird watching, remains open, officials urge residents to use social distancing guidelines while in the area.
As of Monday afternoon, there are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Coles County.
Charleston Mayor Brandon Combs said he rather have policies and resources in place and the city not need them, rather than need them and the city not be prepared.
