Spring severe weather season is quickly approaching, and an Effingham County committee is working to plan ahead.
The Effingham County All Hazards Mitigation Planning Committee meets Thursday night in the Effingham County Emergency Operations Center.
The main topic: how to prevent injuries and deaths while maintaining vital services.
The committee is working on a plan to identify ways they can protect people and property from natural and man-made disasters.
The county, municipalities of Altamont, Beecher City, Effingham, Mason, Shumway, and Watson, several townships, fire departments, the American Red Cross, and the Illinois Department of Agriculture have also been participating in the planning process.
Effingham County has been part of three federal disaster declarations since 1996 and suffered at least 38 million dollars in property and crop damages.
The meeting starts at 6 and is open to the public.
A public forum will be held later this spring for residents to review the plan and ask the committee members questions.
