An early morning fire claims the life of a Charleston resident.
Just after 6:30 a.m. Monday, Charleston firefighters responded to 411 N 4th Street for a report of a structure fire with occupants inside.
Officials say bystanders confirmed one occupant escaped the structure, but crews discovered one of the residents deceased after entering to extinguish the blaze.
Coles County Coroner Ed Schniers identified the victim as 75-year-old Wilburn Hutson and says an autopsy will be performed on Wednesday.
Fire damage was limited to contents of the home, but there was smoke and water damage throughout.
Officials say the fire appears to be accidental, but it remains under investigation by the State Fire Marshal and the coroner.
