The cause of last week's Mattoon apartment fire has been released.
Fire Chief Anthony Nichols says a child playing with matches caused the incident Wednesday night at Sunrise Apartments on South Ninth Street.
He says the fire happened on the third floor and left two apartments uninhabitable.
Nichols says the tenants in the damaged apartments contacted the Red Cross for help with finding another place to stay while another person was sent to Sarah Bush Lincoln Hospital as a precaution.
