Marty's Crash Follow Up

Friday, 25 March 2016

No name has been released in the vehicle versus building accident that occurred Thursday at Marty’s Bar and Grill.
“The Charleston Police and Fire unit were dispatched at Marty’s at 12:27 to report a vehicle striking a building, police arrived on scene first, when I arrived the vehicle had already been removed from the building. Luckily the business wasn’t opened so there were no injuries. There were no injuries to the driver” said Fire Chief Steve Bennett.
A woman driving in a green jeep Cherokee slammed into the side of Marty’s Bar and Grill, causing some serious damage to the interior and exterior of the building.
The bar was still up and running Thursday night because they spent seven hours making repairs to secure the building and make it safe for customers.
When the vehicle crashed into the building it knocked over a booth and shattered a window.
The outside of the building had glass and shattered bricks on the side walk.
The impact was so loud that Eastern student Hannah Magda could hear the incident from a nearby residential hall.
“I live in Lincoln so I heard the crash from my window and I ran over to my window and watched the after math” said Magda.
One witness saw the driver in her car after the accident and commented that she seemed very upset.
“The girl was on the phone with someone waving her hands around, she seemed quite upset. Someone came out and helped her move her bumper out of the street and then she moved her car to Lincoln’s parking lot” said Magda.
The Cherokee did have some damages, but was able to drive to across the street nearby parking lot.
“The police weren’t there yet, I just saw the car that was kind of parked right across the street from Marty’s and the bumper was completely off, the taillight was a little bit damaged” said Eastern student Sydney Maggio.
Many Eastern students witnessed the accident and shared the news to fellow classmates.
“I think people will want to come out tonight and see the damages” said Eastern student Alexandra Pickens.
Marty’s manager Tyson Sledge said that he doesn’t have an estimate on how much the repairs will cost Marty’s.
The Charleston Police Department were unable to give any information on the accident.
A full accident report will be available on Monday which will include the driver’s name.
