U of I approves tuition increases

The cost of going to the University of Illinois is going up slightly.

The University of Illinois Board of Trustees voted Thursday to increase tuition rates for Illinois resident undergraduates enrolling this fall by 2.2% at the Urbana-Champaign and Illinois Chicago campus.

It would also go up 2% at the University of Illinois Springfield.

The board said the increase will help the universities meet rising costs driven by inflation and after tuition freezes in seven of the last 10 years.

Trustees said, "Modest increases were also approved for nonresident students enrolling in the fall."

According to state law, Illinois students enrolled in public universities are guaranteed four years of unchanged tuition.

The U of I system said that $298 million is provided in financial aid each year, $104 million more than 10 years ago.

Over a third of students pay no tuition or fees, and more than 67% of Illinois students get financial aid, said U of I officials.

They said more than half of Illinois students enrolled pay less than $3,000 per semester, and 79% of undergrads are Illinois residents.
