The University of Illinois Fighting Illini are planning to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Memorial Stadium during their October 19th game against the University of Michigan Wolverines with some new gear.
The Illini will wear throwback uniforms to celebrate the anniversary of the stadium’s dedication game where Illinois hosted Michigan.
During that game on October 19th, 1924, running back Red Grange had a historic six-touchdown performance against the Wolverines.
The jerseys will have a blue base with gold strips that form a pyramid shape, which can be seen in the photo below.
Their helmets will be painted to look like leather helmets the players wore during that time.
“The program has done some throwbacks in the past,” director of football equipment operations Jake Rosch said, “but it was really important to be more accurate to the time the stadium opened.”
The jerseys will also have a 100-year anniversary patch the will be worn throughout the season.
