HSHS Investigates Cybersecurity Breach

An Illinois Health System is reporting a cybersecurity breach.

On August 27th, HSHS (Hospital Sisters Health System) Hospitals said they experienced a temporary technical outage that affected most of their communication systems and their healthcare operations.

HSHS officials said they worked with their I.T department and outside experts, who determined the outage was caused by a cybersecurity breach.

HSHS President and CEO Damond Boatwright said the investigation is on-going and they are still working to determine if any patients' personal information was involved, saying: "We are continuing to investigate and we will share more information as we are able. I want to stress that there will be information that we won't be able to share publicly, and that is so we can protect the security of our systems and the privacy of the patients and communities we serve."

The hospitals are open and still receiving patients, and HSHS leaders said they've restored email and messaging services, said HSHS officials.
