Major Construction Projects Announced at U of I

Major construction projects are getting underway at the University of Illinois.

The projects are being made possible because of a $100 million investment from the Rebuild Illinois Plan, said university officials.

The construction projects are the renovation of Altgeld Hall and the demolition and reconstruction of Illini Hall, said officials.

According to U of I representatives, Altgeld Hall will have its stone veneer repaired, its bell tower replaced, and a complete restoration of the buildings original murals.

Along with the restoration, the building will receive new research space for the Illinois Geometry and Risk labs, as well as new tutoring rooms and classrooms, said university officials.

The new Illini Hall will be a 140,000 square foot building with nearly a dozen classrooms, a new auditorium, and house the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

"These two projects celebrate our campus history and embrace the future. The iconic Altgeld Hall will be restored, and the new Illini Hall will support research and education in mathematics, data science and analytics," said Mayor Diane Wolfe Marlin, Urbana.

"This project is a credit to partnerships that prioritize financial commitments that make modern facilities and infrastructure a reality," said University and Illinois System President Tim Killeen.

The Deconstruction of Illini Hall is currently underway marking the first phase of the multiphase project to rebuild Illini Hall that is expected to conclude in 2026, said university officials.
