Charleston Fire

Thursday, 19 January 2023

An apartment building catches on fire in Charleston early Thursday morning.

The fire happened around 2 A.M. on Tenth Street, said Charleston Fire Chief Steve Bennett.

Bennett said when crews arrived on scene, smoke and fire could be seen coming out of an attached garage.

The fire eventually spread to the home, and up to a second story apartment, said Chief Bennett.

The chief said everyone made it out, but two residents were treated for smoke inhalation, and a cat was killed in the fire.

Because the building sustained heavy fire, smoke, and water damage, residents are temporarily living elsewhere, said officials.

The incident remains under investigation.
