Obama State Capitol Marker

A historical marker for former President Barack Obama now stands on the grounds of Illinois' Old State Capitol commemorating the date when, then U.S. Senator, Obama announced his 2007 presidential bid.

Several dignitaries, including Governor Pritzker and Illinois House Speaker Chris Welch, attended yesterday's ceremony and they said the plaque is now a constant reminder of Obama's message that anything is possible for people all across the world.

"To me, this marker is a reminder that one of our favorite sons," Pritzker said at the event, "brought a message of hope that resonated at a crucial time to people all across the world."

Officials said the marker also notes Obama's 2008 confirmation of his running-mate Joe Biden for vice president.

They said the Old State Capitol Foundation and Illinois Historical Society paid for the $2,961.58 marker.
