Jury Finds Man to be Sexually Violent Person

Thursday, 27 October 2022

A Coles County jury Wednesday found a man convicted of crimes against children to be a Sexually Violent Person.

Kenneth Lewis, 59, had been sentenced to a total of 20 years in prison for a 2004 child sexual assault case and a 2005 child sexual abuse case, according to Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul. Before that, Lewis had served two months in jail for rape in Washington state and was arrested for a child sex offense in 2002, according to Raoul’s office.

In order to prove an offender is a Sexually Violent Person, prosecutors must prove the person is likely to commit future acts of sexual violence if released from custody, Raoul said.

The jury’s decision means Lewis will be committed to the custody of the Illinois Department of Human Services and will be periodically re-evaluated to determine if he continues to meet the criteria of a Sexually Violent Person.
