Illinois Substitute Teacher Shortage

Illinois lawmakers are making an effort to help schools with substitute teacher shortages.

Officials said the legislation would allow retired teachers to come back and serve as a substitutes without loosing their retirement benefits.

They said schools with substitute teacher shortages will be granted a waiver for the retired teachers.

Officials said in order to get a waiver, school districts must give evidence of a shortage and an estimate of the number of paid hours in the school year the substitutes will work.

They said right now, retired teachers can sub after one full school year of retirement and not exceed 120 paid days or 600 hours.

The legislation was introduced on February fourth and is under review in committee.
