Champaign NOAA Weather Radio Station Off-Air Until Further Notice

Friday, 21 February 2020

If you own a NOAA weather radio and listen to Champaign station WXJ-76, you won't be receiving a signal for an extended period of time.

The National Weather Service says the station, which covers a large part of east central Illinois, is off-air until further notice.

The NWS has to find a new tower for the transmitter, a process that could take up to six months.

The Champaign signal covers nine counties, including most of Coles County.

While nearby stations in surrounding towns cover most of the affected area, none of those stations cover Champaign County.

As the spring severe weather season approaches, NWS meteorologists highly recommend residents having multiple ways to receive watches and warnings, including their website, social media platforms, and local media outlets.
