As students return to campus, the University of Illinois' police department is clearing the air about cannabis use on campus.
Police said although cannabis is legal in the state of Illinois, federal prohibitions on the drug remain in effect for all colleges and universities that receive federal funding.
They said no cannabis is allowed on University of Illinois property, which includes residence halls, outdoor spaces, and sidewalks and roads owned by the university.
Interim Chief Matt Myrick said his department doesn't want students getting in trouble for simply not knowing university policy.
