Lerna Dog Death Investigation

Tuesday, 16 February 2016

An investigation is underway for an animal abuse case out of Lerna.

Manager of the Coles County Animal Shelter, Julie Deters, says a 9-month-old pitbull-mix was found in the trash can at 601 College Street in Lerna.

She says she suspects the dog's body was moved from its original location, but after analyzing the remains, it was determined the dog had been beaten to death.

Deters says she's being persistent in pursuing this case, because no animal should be treated like this.

She says she had been to the residence before for similar cases.

Deters says the original call was for a domestic situation where the victim said the boyfriend had beat the dog to death.

She says two other animals were removed from the residence, and one has already been adopted.
