A local police dispatcher is keeping the public safe, but also our furry friends!
Penny Standerfer spends her extra time as the Animal Services Coordinator at the new Shelby County Animal Control Facility that opened in November.
She says as of December 31, 2015 they have rescued 2,142 animals over almost nine years.
Standerfer says the county worked on getting the new shelter for years, and it features indoor and outdoor kennels, top notch beds, and even a new place for the animals to take a bath!
She says the building's extra space was definitely needed!
Officials say the facility is a no kill shelter and has saved hundreds of animals from being euthanized.
In fact in its first week open Standerfer says five dogs and three cats were adopted.
