EIU Mumps

Thursday, 17 September 2015

Since September 8th, there have been five confirmed cases of mumps on the campus of Eastern Illinois University. But EIU isn't alone, officials at the University of Illinois say an outbreak has reached about 100 cases, and another four reported at Heartland Community College in McLean County. News Watch spoke with Eastern Health Services Doctor Sheila Baker about what the students and community need to know about this highly contagious viral illness. Baker says after the onset of the disease symptoms will last between 7-10 days. She says since it is a virus, there's no specific plan of treatment besides keeping isolated, and treating the symptoms, like fever, individually. If you have any questions about the mumps or the MMR vaccine, you can contact your local health department.
