Gail Richard is the Director of the Autism Transitional STEP Program that's just been unveiled at Eastern Illinois University, and she couldn't be more excited to help these students. She says the reasoning behind the program is simple: from elementary school to high school, there's usually a special education program available to students. Now, EIU will be able to serve an often-missed demographic, autistic students transitioning into college. Richard says outreach is important, and since the unveiling of the program, she's already been contacted by current college students, and prospective students that would like to be in the program. She says getting into the program is simple, get admitted to EIU, connect with the student disability center to get the official label of being somewhere within the autism spectrum, and then you can enroll.
