Commencement Speaker Cuts

State Representative Reggie Phillips is proposing a ban against schools using state funding to pay for commencement speakers. Phillips says some state schools spend tens of thousands of dollars on this, when there ARE other options. And Phillips tells News Watch those other options will help combat the state's budget gap. Senator Phillips says this proposed bill would likely impact schools like the University of Illinois that are known for spending nearly 50-thousand dollars on commencement speakers. He says in general the bill is asking institutions to enact some plan like EIU's. Phillips wants those institutions to know that a similair plan will help the states tremendous budget gap.
