Liquor Sale Ban in Oakland

"As long as I've been around it's been a dry town and there hasn't been any complaints. And that's one of the things I think draws families to town." Faith Carr grew up in Oakland she's against the alcohol referendum. She says if liquor was sold in the small community it could hurt it, rather than help. "You start being able to buy it and you could have people hanging around that you necessarily don't want hanging around. I think it could open a can of worms." But there are those residents like Linda Carnahan who disagree. "I think it's a good idea. Because why not keep the taxes here. As long as it's just package liquor, I think it's fine." And Roy Carr who says he tried to get a petition passed 25 years ago and says it really wouldn't be a big deal. "It ain't gonna make one more or less drinker. The city will get a little revenue so that's why I don't think it'll help or hurt very much. But it could help." Mayor Jamie Harris says more revenue is exactly what a small town needs in these tough economic times. "Harris tells me he feels this would bring new businesses into town and that he would look into putting a sales tax on any liquor sold that would generate revenue for the schools." "This is kinda a family. You've got the family feel and everything. And i just don't think we need to bring it in."
