Impaired Drivers Won't Get Lucky This Year

This Saint Patrick's Day, a local sheriff's department says impaired driving could cost you more than just a 'Pot of Gold'.

The Coles County Sheriff's office is reminding motorists of the dangers associated with drunk driving.

The office is teaming up with the Illinois State Police and I-DOT for an increased traffic safety presence.

"With St. Patrick's Day falling on a Monday this year, we expect increased celebrations throughout the weekend prior," said Chief Deputy Tyler Heleine. "Please plan ahead for a sober ride home before you leave the house -- your safety and the safety of others depends on it."

Impaired and distracted driving, speeding, and other traffic laws will be strictly enforced, the office said.

If you plan to party over the weekend, never drive impaired, designate someone sober to take you home, and if you see an impaired driver on the road, contact law enforcement, said the sheriff's office.
