Taylorville Fire Department Saves Teenager in Ice Rescue

The warmer conditions across east-central Illinois lead to a life threatening situation in Taylorville.

Firefighters responded to a call for help around 3:30 P.M. on Sunday afternoon at Manner's Park pond, said the Taylorville Fire Department.

A person called 911 after seeing a 16-year-old girl had fallen through the ice about 30 feet from land, said Assistant Fire Chief Cody Rogers.

Firefighters were able to throw her a rope and pull her onto a nearby dock, Rogers said.

The teen was then taken to a local hospital with minor injuries, Rogers said.

Statewide, officials say as temperatures warm-up, waterways are starting to thaw, and it's dangerous to be out on ice that's less than two inches thick.
