Shelby County Launches New Safety Alert Messaging Service

Friday, 17 January 2025

The Shelby County Office of Emergency Management announced its partnership with TextMyGov, a smart text messaging service that enables residents to receive important notifications and easily find information.

Shelby County officially launched the new text messaging system to the public Friday, and residents may receive a notification from 91896 from Shelby County initiating the service.

Residents who wish to opt-out of the messaging service can do so at any time by texting STOP, said county officials.

Individuals who don't receive the initial message can choose to opt-in by texting the keyword SHELBYCOUNTY to the number 91896, said officials.

Reply YES after the message appears asking to confirm opt-in.

Residents may receive notifications for road closures, election information and more.

Additionally, the TextMyGov service is vital for public health and safety, said Shelby County Emergency Management officials.

They said this allows the Emergency Management Office to notify residents, regardless of opt-in or opt-out, of serious threats throughout the County such as boil orders, hazardous material spills, train derailments and evacuations.
