A battery parts company breaks ground Wednesday on a $1.5 billion dollar project in Vigo
County.
The Oregon-based Entek company will produce battery separators for lithium-ion battery
manufacturers.
Entek executives say the complex will create more than 640 jobs and will give a boost to
Indiana's growing electric vehicle industry.
The new 1.4-million-square foot complex will produce enough battery separators for more than
a million vehicles each year, said Entek on Wednesday.
Governor Eric Holcomb joined other city leaders for the groundbreaking in Terre Haute.
"This decision cements Indiana's leadership in the electric vehicle supply chain sector, and we
are thrilled to partner with Entek to speed the commercialization of U.S.-built EV's," Holcomb
said.
According to a news release on the groundbreaking, Entek is the only U.S.-owned and operated
manufacturer of wet-process lithium-ion battery separators.
The Biden administration has been working to strengthen U.S. energy independence and
reduce dependance on China, according to a news release.
“Beating China on advanced battery development and production starts right here in Terre
Haute, today,” Keith said in a statement.
The plant, which was announced in March, is expected to open sometime between 20-25 and
20-27.
