Shelby County Legionnaire's Disease Discovery

Wednesday, 30 August 2023

Health officials are updating the public on the discovery of a rare illness in Shelby County.

Health officials said three cases of Legionnaire's Disease were diagnosed in Findlay between July 30th and August 4th.

They said the disease is a serious lung infection contracted by breathing contaminated water droplets.

Shelby County Health Department Director of Environmental Health Services Jeffrey Houska said the Illinois Department of Public Health tested Findlay's water supply for the bacteria and the results were negative.

He said it's hard to find the sources of outbreaks because people often test too late and the environment changes.

Houska said all three cases were the same strain of Legionnaire's, but no additional cases have been identified.

He said the county will continue to monitor the environment for a year.
