Eastern Illinois University will not hold its Miss Black EIU Scholarship Pageant this year, after more than 50 years of the event.
The Pageant began in 1971 to promote and celebrate African American heritage, cultre and expiriences within Eastern's community during African American Heritage Month.
This year's event was cancelled in coordination with the Black Student Union, as a result of not enough contestants showing interest in the competition, said Eastern's Student Life Director, Cecilia Brinker.
In place of this year's pageant, The university wants to host a Black Excellence Fashion Show next month, said Brinker.
The EIU Student Life Office and Black Student Union said they are looking forward to the event's return in 2024.
