Champaign's Security Camera Registration Program, is the city's latest effort to combat crime and promote public safety.
Police are urging its residents and business owners to register their exterior cameras online.
The Champaign Police Department said when a serious crime is commited near an address with a registered camera, officers will contact the camera's owner and request to see available video.
The program is completely voluntary and you aren't required to share video when it's requested, said police.
The department said that joining the program does not grant them acess to your camera system.
To register you must provide the address of where the camera is located and contact information of the camera's owner.
The department said the registration process takes less than a minute.

You can also print a registration form from the website and mail it to the Champaign Police Department.
