IDNR Requests Hunter's Help in Tracking Disease

Friday, 28 October 2022

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) wants deer hunter's help in tracking Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in deer.

CWD is a fatal nervous system disease in the animals.

Symptoms include weight loss, drooling, and a lack of coordination from the animals.

Since 2002, over 150,000 deer have been sampled, and in that time, thirteen hundred have tested positive.

Biologists track the distribution of and intensity of the disease primarily through hunter-harvested deer.

The IDNR is offering free testing sites around the state and encourage hunters to bring in samples from a deer or an entire deer head to give them the all-clear.

In Coles County, hunters can take samples to Stewarts Archery on Old State Road.

A full list of locations around the state can be found here or on the Hunt Illinois app.
