Electricity Rates to Rise as Supplier Changes

Monday, 10 October 2022

Utility rates are set to rise in several Central Illinois communities as they change electricity suppliers, city leaders announced.

The cities of Charleston, Mattoon, Paris and Effingham, along with Coles County, had been negotiating a new contract with their current energy supplier, but those negotiations failed to reach an offer “with a satisfactory combination of price and duration,” according to a news release from the City of Mattoon.

As a result, those communities will revert to Ameren as their electrical supplier, according to the release. Ameren’s current supply rate is 12.24 cents per kilowatt hour, up from 4.18 cents per kilowatt hour under the cities’ current contract.
