A firefighter suffered injuries battling a house fire in Effingham.
Fire Chief Bob Tutko said the Effingham Fire Department responded to a house fire at 605 West Fayette Avenue Saturday afternoon.
He said first responders quickly arrived since the fire was only two houses west of Effingham Fire Station 1.
Tutko said five people were safely evacuated, but a family cat did not make it out.
He said the cause of the fire was careless disposal of burned material and the firefighter who suffered a back injury has since been released from the hospital.
