New State Program to Combat Court Reporter Shortage

Wednesday, 19 February 2020

A new state program is taking aim at a shortage being felt in courtrooms across the country.

Illinois has started a program called First Steps, which will be taught by court reporters.

It's a free introduction to court reporting class where participants will learn about the profession and get some hands-on training.

One third of Illinois court reports are eligible for retirement, which means more than 400 employees will need to be replaced in the coming years.

A First Steps class will be held this May in the Edgar County Courthouse.

Advance registration is a requirement for the course.
