Safe Passage - First Mattoon Client

Tuesday, 4 February 2020

A new program launched by the Mattoon Police Department, is working.

Police say they received their first client for the Safe Passage program last night.

Safe Passage allows people in the community who struggle with substance abuse to come to the police station and ask for help.

Police say when abusers arrive seeking help, police will call a rehabilitation center to make sure the person receives the correct counseling and assistance.

Deputy Chief Sam Gaines, says the program has a no questions asked policy, and they will not use people to gather information on drug crimes, or take anyone into custody.

Gaines says all it takes is one brave soul to really get the process going.

Gaines and the entire police department hopes the very best on the road to recovery for their client.
