A Sangamon County official and a former Springfield mayor are dead following a plane crash southeast of Springfield.

The Sangamon County Sheriff's Department says the pilot of a twin-engine Piper Aerostar reported having trouble with the plane's instruments prior to the crash Tuesday afternoon around 3 p.m.

Springfield Airport Authority Exectutive Director Mark Hanna says the plane was attempting to land at Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport in Springfield after departing from Huntsville, Alabama, and missed two houses before impact.

Sangamon County Deputy Coroner Jim Allmon confirmed two of the victims were Frank and Cinda Edwards, both of Springfield.

Cinda was the Sangamon County Coroner, a position she held since 2011.

Her husband Frank was a former mayor of Springfield.

Allmon says the third victim was identified as John Evans of Glenarm.
