One vote made the difference in determining whether not cannabis sales would be allowed in Effingham.
After multiple lengthy discussions, Effingham City Council met last night and voted 3-2 to reject an ordinance that would prohibit the sale of adult-use recreational marijuana.
That means businesses will be allowed to sell recreational marijuana on January 1st, though the council still has to vote on where establishments can set up within the city's zoning.
The council also approved a 3% tax on cannabis.
Effingham joins Champaign and Urbana in communities that have approved the sale of recreational cannabis.
Clark County, Crawford County, and the cities of Robinson and Decatur have decided to ban the sale in their jurisdictions.
The city of Charleston placed a moratorium on the matter to learn more about the law before making a decision.
