A former Champaign mayor is trying to get himself a seat on the city council.

Former mayor Don Gerard says he's vying for the spot because he felt it was his duty to offer his services.

Gerard said he didn't announce his decision sooner because he wanted people to apply for the position if they wanted it and he wanted to let democracy run its course.

The seat is opening because current council member Marci Dodds is moving out of town.
