Wednesday, Eastern Illinois University began the process of laying off nearly 200 civil service employees. These employees include building service workers, administrative assistants, and maintenance personnel. Layoffs were administered by phone as well as in-person. EIU Administrator Jennifer Garren was personally affected. However, she says that the students' quality of education and services is the highest priority. These layoffs come as a result of the eight-month-long Illinois budget stalemate. In addition to the civil service layoffs, all university administrative and professional personnel will be forced to take furlough days, also known as unpaid work days. University administrators say if state funds are given to the university by the layoff date of March 12, many or all of the layoff notices could be rescinded.
