An Eastern Illinois University student died Saturday after an incident with police in which an officer was disarmed.
Yahacov Dennis, 22, of Chicago called 911 for help shortly after 1 a.m. Saturday morning, according to information released by Charleston Police and Eastern Illinois University. After officers arrived in the 200 block of West Lincoln Avenue, "a rapidly evolving event took place where a CPD Officer was disarmed," according to a CPD news release.
"Preliminary investigation indicates the individual became in possession of this firearm and discharged the firearm towards himself," according to the CPD news release, which adds that Charleston Fire Department EMS personnel arrived to give aid and take Dennis for treatment.
Dennis was pronounced dead at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana at 10:34 a.m. Saturday, according to Champaign County Coroner Laurie Brauer. An autopsy was scheduled for Monday.
News Watch reached out to the Champaign County Coroner's office, but no other information is available at this time.
EIU president Jay Gatrell shared information about Dennis' death in a campus-wide email, and encouraged those affected to reach out to Eastern's Counseling Clinic for support.
Illinois State Police are investigating the incident, according to Charleston Police. News Watch contacted ISP, but they did not give additional information.
